The Annual Vsesvit Readings in Celebration of Literary Translation

The Annual Vsesvit Readings were begun in 2011 to celebrate the art of literary translation and the mission of the journal Vsesvit (The Universe), the oldest active literary journal in Ukraine. Founded in 1925 by Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Vasyl' Blakytnyi, and Mykola Khvyl'ovyi, the journal has translated over 4,000 works from 98 literatures of the world into the Ukrainian language.
The Vsesvit Evening, held in the Chapel of Robinson College, Cambridge, consists of musical performances and literary readings of texts in the original language and in English and Ukrainian translation. The readings are performed by the students and academic staff of Cambridge's Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages. Languages read include Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Hebrew, Italian, Turkish, and Catalan.
International Conferences, Workshops, and Symposia

Cambridge Ukrainian Studies hosts regular international conferences and workshops that seek to advance the field of Ukrainian Studies and to promote intellectual exchange about Ukraine around the world. Highlights of the 2011-12 academic year were the workshop Independent Ukraine: Twenty Years On, whose keynote speaker was Oles' Donii (former leader of the student movement in support of independence), and the symposium A Hidden History of Soviet Cinema: The Legacy of Ihor Savchenko.
